PhD Grants Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology
The Research Group focuses on law, authority and social behaviour in plural legal settings under conditions of increasing globalisation.
The project deals with local adoptions of international right discourses. It will study the global circulation of legal knowledge and norms of governance by looking how law is used by individuals and groups in conflicts with states. The projects wants to identify the social and political conditions that make people chose recourse to law in their conflicts with the state and how legal recourse relates to other modes of articulating demands. Moreover, it wants to assess the effect of recourse to law in terms of changes in norms and expectations and in modes of the social organisation of demands. Thereby it attempts to trace the changes in what is expected of state rule, the shifting norms of rights and justice, and the changes in practices of claiming rights caused by the interplay of local efforts and international pressures in the institutionalization of norms of governance.
The focus is on states with majority Muslim populations, e.g. Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Indonesia, but also others depending on the applicant’s preferences.
Please consult the website
http://www.eth.mpg.de for more information on the project.

[Japan] Embassy of Japan in the UK Offers Scholarships for Postgraduate Research Studies
Embassy of Japan in the UK offers postgraduate scholarships for students who have United Kingdom nationality, i.e. a UK passport. (Non-UK nationals must contact the Japanese Embassy in their country of nationality.)
This award is offered on an annual basis to those with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, under the age of 35, who wish to continue their study at graduate level in Japan. The scholarship is primarily a research award, though enrolment onto a taught degree course may be possible in some cases. Japanese language ability is not prerequisite.
Grantees can pursue research in any field as long as it is related to one’s first degree. It can be difficult, however, to place students who may wish to study visual and performing arts. Candidates are encouraged to establish contacts with Japanese academics in their field when applying for the scholarship. University preferences are taken into account as far as possible.
Applications normally begin yearly in April and the scholarship is tenable from April or October the following year. Those leaving in April will hold their award for two years, whilst those departing in October will hold theirs for 18 months. The Japanese Government will provide return air fare, school fees and a monthly stipend (¥172,000 - subject to change).
Application forms for the 2008-2010 postgraduate studies scholarship will be available from the Japanese Embassy in London from 2007.
If you have further queries, please contact the MEXT Scholarship Officer on 020 7465 6583 or e-mail scholarship@jpembassy.org.uk.

[Japan] Examination for Japanese University (EJU) Admission for International Student 2007
For further information please contact eju@jasso.go.jp
For description is more complete, please click http://www.jasso.go.jp/eju/index_e.html
The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) is used to evaluate whether international students who wish to study at the undergraduate level at universities or other such higher educational institutions in Japan possess the Japanese language skills and the basic academic abilities needed to study at those institutions.
EJU takes the place of both the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and the General Examination for Foreign Students (no longer administered as of December 2001), which many universities (undergraduate level) and other higher educational institutions in Japan previously required international students to take for admission. Starting in 2002, EJU will be administered twice a year (June and November) in Japan and other countries and regions. For a list of examination sites, see “Examination sites.”
EJU includes the following subject tests: Japanese as a Foreign Language, Science (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), Japan and the World, and Mathematics. Applicants select which subject tests to take based on the requirements of the Japanese university they wish to enter. The examination is available in Japanese or English, and applicants may specify, at the time of application, the examination language they wish to take (the Japanese as a Foreign Language test is administered in Japanese only).
